How often should you scan your PC?

How often should you scan your PC?

Theoretically, once you've installed your anti-virus software on a clean PC, you should never have to scan it. Almost every anti-virus product worth its salt provides two main types of protection: on-access and on-demand. On-access protection provides continual monitoring of your computer, whereas on-demand is essentially a scan that you either run yourself or schedule for later (perhaps to run overnight).

If the on-access protection is any good, it should detect threats as they reach your computer. It can then repel them before they take hold. However, the worrying truth is that anti-virus software can be slow to react, which means a new type of threat may be able to worm its way onto your PC without your security product noticing anything amiss.

Eventually the anti-virus program may download an update that informs it about the malware now tunning on your PC. A scan could highlight its presence and aid its removal. Unless you are suspicious that a threat is active on your system, then scanning your PC once a month should be enough.

How to Launch Chrome Apps Directly from the Toolbar

Google Chrome is one of the best browsers in the market. For some months, it have been the number one browser in terms of use, having overtaken Mozilla Firefox and giving a superb competition to Internet Explorer.

A part of credit for such success goes to the extensions and applications available for the Chrome Browser. The noble idea of extensions was popularized by Mozilla and it was so effective that Chrome also followed the same path and extended its extensions and applications base beside the classic ones. The extensions are accessible from the new page tab, and basically (in most cases) are shortcuts to various applications hosted on the web.

The only problem is that most of the times Apps for Chrome gets mixed with available extensions and usually after Installing Apps on Chrome, we don’t remember using them. Also we get accustomed to using extensions and having to go to the new tab page (to start a app) may seem strange.

Thankfully, AppJump solve the problem, enabling us to launch any application without leaving the toolbar extensions.

How to Launch Chrome Apps Directly from the Toolbar

A very good idea that also serves to organize them, and a mini-control panel from which we can add groups, disable applications or even get rid of them altogether. Automatically, this extension goes on to become one of the most interesting one of the year due to its usefulness and ease of use.

How Google Chrome Extensions Are Beneficial For College Students

How Google Chrome Extensions Are Beneficial For College Students

Now more than ever college students rely on the Internet to get their work done.  From online college courses to researching term papers and getting online help with math homework, the Internet is a crucial central part of the college students learning experience.   Google Chrome is an excellent Internet browser that students can use to take full advantage of their online learning experience.  Besides being the fastest Internet browser for most web surfing scenarios, Google Chrome also offers a wide range of free open source add on tools, called Chrome Extensions;.  Here is a list of some of the best Google Chrome Extensions for college students.

StayFocused

While the Internet is a great tool for connecting with peers, professors and experts, it can also be a real time drain when time is spent unwisely.  The StayFocused app helps you focus on important tasks on the Internet without getting bogged down with constantly checking your friends’ Facebook status or going through endless Reddit posts.  This app works by limiting the number of minutes per day that you allow yourself to stay on any particular site that you program in.  So, for instance while you may want to be able to spend unlimited amounts of time at websites assigned by your professor, you can limit your daily time to sites like Reddit to one or two hours.

Diet Diary

One of the biggest lifestyle changes for students leaving home for college for the first time is the change in eating habits.  As a full time student with a limited budget, it can be difficult to keep healthy eating habits at college.  The Diet Diary extension can help you keep track of what you eat on a day to day basis, and also help you track your ideal weight and set goals for yourself to help you achieve your weight and healthy eating goals.

Open Library Book Search

If you are looking for a good read but do not have the money to spend on the latest best seller at the corner bookstore, the Open Library Book Search extension may help you find a good read at a great price – that is, free!  The extension searches the openlibrary.org database to find books that are free to read.  This is a great extension whether you are doing research for a term paper or just trying to get a juicy bit of fiction to read between classes relax a bit.

RapidMailReader

College students often find themselves with multiple email accounts assigned and used for different purposes.   Besides your personal email account, you also may have a high school account, any other special purpose accounts you may have set up for product or social site registration and now a student account from the college which requires regular checking.  RapidMailReader is a Chrome extension that allows you to converge up to ten email accounts together to read at the same time.  This is a great time saving app since it removes the necessity and confusion of having to check all of these accounts individually.

WordStash

WordStash is a Chrome extension designed to help you learn anything you need to learn based on flash cards.  The app allows you to create a blank flash card based template and then enter in your own custom questions and answers.  This is a great extension for studying for tests or just quizzing yourself on information you want to remember later.

Utube Trends

Utube Trends allows you to search YouTube for the most popular videos in a specified country.  With the massive amount of YouTube videos uploaded every minute, this app is a great way to quickly find and share the best of what YouTube has to offer.

Tell us about the other useful extension in comments!!!

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

Do you know how to find the largest file on your computer? There are a couple of ways to do this. In Windows 7, the new search functions allow you to find files of a particular size and then sort them.

Use Windows Explorer

To find the largest files on your computer using Explorer, open Computer and click up in the search box. When you click inside of it, a little window pops up below with a list of your recent searches and then a add search filter option.

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

Go ahead and click on Size and then you’ll get another menu with a couple of options:

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

Go ahead and pick something like Large, Huge or Gigantic otherwise you will get a list of way too many files. If you just want to see larger files, I suggest choosing huge or gigantic. Then just press enter without typing in anything else.

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

You’ll start getting a list, but it’s not sorted yet as you can see above. To sort it by size, you have to click on the little options button:

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

From there, you can to select Details view. Then you will see the size column and be able to sort by size.

How to find the Largest Files on Your Computer?

Here’s the final list of files on my computer sorted by size. This is the easies way since it’s built right into Windows and you don’t have to install anything. It also has enough options so I can see just the largest files on the computer.

If you’re not running Windows 7, then you can use a third-party program. One such program which I know is TreeSize.

You can download TreeSize Free from here:

Once you install it, go ahead and run it and you’ll see a window like this:

TreeSize

The program will automatically start to scan the C drive and you’ll see in realtime as the sizes of the directories are calculated. Once it has finished, the blue progress bar will disappear and you’ll be able to see the largest folder by size.

largest Folder

You can then expand out the folders and see the largest files in each folder. With this program, it’s still not possible to instantly see the largest files on the entire computer, just the largest by folder. Still it’s a really useful app and it’s not hard to find the largest files quickly because those tend to be the largest folders also.

Run Android apps on Windows

Run Android apps on Windows

Most Android-based smartphone users would agree that they would prefer testing an app before downloading it to their phone. The reason behind this is usually to avoid unnecessary space hogging apps. Some users might also wish to play some of the cool mobile games available for the Android platform on their PC i.e. on a larger display. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how can your favorite Android apps on your Windows-based PC using a simple and free software called BlueStacks.

BlueStacks Install

BlueStacks is an app player for Windows, which can play Android apps faster than it can run on a phone and that too, on a full-screen. The app includes 10 pre-loaded apps and one can add up to 26 more apps of their choice. Favorite apps can be pushed directly from the phone onto the PC using an Android app via internet route. Download and install the software for Windows from the URL ‘www.bluestacks.com’. The software is nothing, but a simple virtual Android operating system, which simulates an Android phone or UI. It uses the desktop PC’s resources such as the processor, the internet connection, mouse, keyboard and the audio card. The installed folder located on the PC contains the necessary files for its use, namely the kernel, data, system, boot and storage (the SD card). The BlueStacks Android (Gingerbread) virtual machine creates a hardware environment with a limited amount of storage (around 363 MB) for installing apps and 262 MB of SD card storage space.

Once BlueStacks is installed, the application will be running the Android operating system in the background and you will see an icon in the system tray area and a widget will be running on your screen. A single click on the widget will reveal the Android system apps installed in it. Click on the apps and enjoy them on a large screen. Additional apps can be installed from the BlueStacks website by signing in using your Facebook account details. To get to this page, all you need to do is click on the BlueStacks widget, scroll to and click on the app icon/shortcut ‘Get more apps’. A website will open up where you can login using your Facebook details. Once logged in, simply click on the ‘Subscribe’ button for the available apps (in the Featured Apps section) and they shall automatically get installed on your system via the internet. The ‘Could Connect’ link on the same page will highlight a special 9-pin numerical code which needs to be entered on your Android phone running the BlueStacks Cloud Connect app (download it from the Android Market for free). Once done, you can push apps from your phone to your PC by simply selecting multiple apps and syncing it.

That’s it! You can now enjoy all your favorite apps from your phone on your Windows desktop PC.

Save your Gmail Messages in Google Docs

You can save your Gmail messages in Google Docs and then edit them like any other document. The other use case is that once a Gmail message is available inside Google Docs, you can easily export that email as a PDF file or as a Word document while retaining the original formatting and without requiring an external PDF writer.

Save your Gmail Messages in Google Docs

To integrated Google Docs with Gmail, go to the Labs page and enable the “Create a Document” gadget. Save the changes and return to your Gmail Inbox.

Next, open any of your existing email messages and you should see a “Create a Document” link under the More box as shown in the screenshot above. This will export the current message as a new document in Google Docs – the rich text formatting is preserved but if the message includes any file attachments, Google Docs will ignore them.

One more thing. The Google Docs app for Android allows offline access to your documents so once you have saved your most important Gmail messages in Google Docs, they can be accessed on your phone without a data connection as well.

Internet Security: Common Browser-Based Attacks to Avoid at Any Cost

Internet Security: Common Browser-Based Attacks to Avoid at Any Cost
Don’t fall victim to the attacks described below. It’s ultimately you who decides here whether you’ll let hackers access to your computer or compromise your account. So make an informed decision by reading and implementing the methods and advise in the post below.

Facebook Phishing – To Access the Video, Please Login

Some of your friends might post a video like this on your wall:

Facebook Phishing – To Access the Video, Please Login

Oh cool, a hot chick video. Click. Here’s what happens after you click:

Not a Facebook.com

A new window will appear prompting you to enter your username and password. If you’re in a rush, you probably WON’T notice the URL above.

Well, that’s what happened with many Facebook users on May 29th. The name of this phishing attack is “Most Hilarious Video Ever.” If you were a victim of this attack, your account was compromised.

Do you want to run that Java Applet? It comes from a trusted source…NOT!

Do you want to run that Java Applet? It comes from a trusted source…NOT!So you want to run some cool game or online app in your browser. Before you do that, the website is asking you to run a Java Applet:

Do you want to run that Java Applet? It comes from a trusted source…NOT!

If you’re like most casual surfers, you might say: “Why not?” and proceed by clicking on “Run.”

BIG MISTAKE. See what happens after that:

Do you want to run that Java Applet? It comes from a trusted source…NOT!

Yes, several files are created in your Temp folder including one .exe file which is probably a dangerous virus. Java apps can do nasty things in your computer. That’s why browsers give you ‘danger’ windows like the one above.

Do not download .exe files from Facebook (apps)

The below screenshot is from a malicious Facebook application that asks you to ‘update your video software’ by installing a brand new FLV player:

Do not download .exe files from Facebook (apps)

Why would they REALLY ask you to download a FLV player? Is there a virus in it? In this case, no. The reason is money. Every time you download the software (FLV Direct Player), the owner of the Facebook app will get money for that. It’s called PPI (pay per install).

After a bit of research, I found they get $1.5 for each new installation. So if 1000 people download and install that FLV player, the owners of the Facebook app get $1500:

Do not download .exe files from Facebook (apps)

Rogue Antivirus – Would you Like to Download Anti-virus That is ACTUALLY a Virus?

This has happened to me twice so far. I would be searching for a particular topic on Google and then click on a search result and see a page come up that looks like a Microsoft security scan.

Rogue Antivirus – Would you Like to Download Anti-virus That is ACTUALLY a Virus?

THIS IS A FAKE SECURITY SCANNER. There is NO WAY for a security scanner or an anti-virus to run in your browser without your permission. After this ‘scanning’ is done, you’ll usually get a window saying your computer is infected:

FAKE SECURITY SCANNER

After that, you get prompted to download an .exe file which is the magical antivirus that will remove the infections. Unfortunately, the file you’ll download actually contains a virus and if  your computer wasn’t infected before it will be now.

Another common screen you may get is this:

Rogue Antivirus – Would you Like to Download Anti-virus That is ACTUALLY a Virus?

One Key Lesson to Learn:

Who’s most likely to fall victim of these attacks? It’s the person with the lowest attention span.

Bad news: We ALL have low attention spans. Hackers are using this to make us click “Run” and execute a Javascript applet without seeing the URL, or enter our login information and not see the beginning of the URL realizing it’s an unknown website.

The key lesson is: If you get a suspicious message or request (like the ones above), SLOW DOWN and say: “Wait a minute. This doesn’t seem right. Let me check the URL. Or can anti-virus programs really scan my computer via the browser?” So sustaining your attention is the key to protecting yourself from these kinds of attacks.

If you Like this Post than share it with your FACEBOOK friends!!

How To Scan Documents using Android Phone

These days, smartphones have become a replacements for everything in our day-to-day life. Whatever desktops and laptops used to do previously are being successfully handled by tablets and smartphones. One similar replacement for a bulky scanner is any Android device with a camera.

You can scan any document with your Android phone or tablet and convert it to a PDF document.  This includes newspaper articles, pictures, printed documents…virtually anything printed can be converted to a pdf with your Android smartphone or tablet.  Here’s how.

Situation
You need to scan a document (contract, photo, newspaper article, etc.) convert it to a pdf, and e-mail it to someone.  You are not at your office, but you have your Android smartphone or tablet, such as a Samsung Galaxy Tab, with you.

Solution
There is the magic of a tiny app which handles the operations in a smart way – and that smart application is – CamScanner. Let us have a clear step by step demo of how to use this application to scan documents with phone camera.

1. Install CamScanner application from Android Market. (Search Market for CamScanner)

2. Open CamScanner, click on camera scan icon as shown below.

3. Take snap making sure that all margins are covered. Its recommended to use a background with opposite contrast of your document. If your document is a dark one, keep it on light background and vice versa. Once the photo is captured, you will be given an option to accept it or retake another one. Decide based on clarity and coverage area. Taking images from too far may not render the alphabets properly on your scanned digital document.

4. Once this is done, it will present you with the next screen to confirm the actual margins of the document. The app identifies the margins properly, but in few cases, you might need to edit if your document is not so distinguished from the background. You can edit margins / retain the same and click on the check mark to proceed to next step. In further steps, it will trim the image and enhance it to get your scanned document ready. This is the last chance for you if you want to rotate the scanned document in clockwise / anticlockwise direction.
